ALLERGY N I YOUNG
PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD
September 30 is the last date
for returning application forms so if you are planning to nominate your child/young person or someone up to 21 years of age
who has helped to raise awareness of serious or potentially life threatening allergies, please return the completed form ASAP
or contact us if you need one.
The
Jane McVeigh Cup will be presented to the winner by a member of the McVeigh family and a local celebrity, at a formal dinner
being held in Parliament Buildings on Friday 24 October. A few tickets are still
available at £75 each.
This
will be the first presentation of the award in honour of 17 year old Jane McVeigh, a nut allergic Belfast girl who died so
tragically in December 2006 following an anaphylactic reaction.
The
following poem was written by Jane’s younger sister Grace, for the launch of our Young Person of the Year Award in January
this year. Grace read her very moving poem to the audience:
We all are here together in order to try
And create great awareness about
Allergies N I
Because an allergy can be serious
and I don't think people know
About the risks involved and
consequences, that’s what we are trying to show
Although it is such a shame
that a tragedy had to take place
In order to grab attention but
I guess that was the case
Because just over a year ago
I lost my big sis Jane
Due to a critical allergy that
put my whole family in pain
Because this accident happened,
today we are trying to show
The dangers involved with allergies
so everyone can know
I know Jane is watching us now
with a proud smile on her face
And I know she wouldn't want
others to find themselves in her place
Through her death she’d
like everyone to learn a bit and know
But its such shame in order
to learn that Janie had to go
She would be so proud to know
that she has helped others learn
People with allergies who find
it to be a rather great concern
Because everyone must understand
the threats that allergies bring
And in respect and memory to
Jane I think it’s a very vital thing
It’s a tragedy that Northern
Ireland had to lose someone just so great
So I think this should hearten
us all to understand and begin to appreciate
Jane has proved how serious
an allergy can be
And I think it’s time
something was done so everyone can see
There isn't quite enough knowledge
provided to everyone
Especially when it’s such
a common thing and something must be done
So in memory of Jane we’re
trying to improve today
And hopefully in the future
Jane will have made an impact in a very big way
BELFAST MARATHON MAY 2008
It was a beautiful day and really exciting to be part of the sea of red T shirts moving together
past the City Hall on our way to Ormeau Park. Most of us participated in the
Fun walk but the more energetic and fitter members, families and friends took part in the various relay teams, nine mile walk
and some even ran the full marathon. We had 175 people including children, teens
and adults all raising awareness and funds for Allergy N I. Supporters en-route gave us lots of encouragement. It was a great family day out and everyone enjoyed the whole experience.
Many people commented they were looking forward to next year’s marathon.
Our thanks to everyone who participated in any way.
The total raised was a fantastic £9,117.50 !!!
